Propane Furnace Vs Oil Furnace

When building a new house or remodeling your existing home, one of the considerations that homeowners make is the kind of heating element to use to keep them warm during the cold winters. The common choices available are furnaces that operate on oil and furnaces which operate on propane. Before deciding, on the kind of fuel that you will be using for your furnace you need to have a clear idea about the features of both. Only when you are well aware of their futures you will be able to take a decision based on your requirement. However, one thing that needs to be kept in mind is that both oil and propane are less expensive than furnaces that run on electricity.

First of all, it needs to be noted here that oil comes from petroleum and crude oil gets refined into different kind of products and the heating oil is not as refined as the oil that is you put in your car. You must have heard people telling you to be wary of fumes. Hence, it is clear that it is not very safe to have an oil tank just near your house. However, at the same time heating oil was designed specifically to heat furnaces and keep the homes warm.

On the other hand propane unlike oil is in gaseous and you should be aware of the fact that propane though a naturally occurring gas is different from natural gas per se. This is because before propane gas goes into the furnace it has to be processed well so that the furnace functions properly.

Now let us look at the advantages and disadvantages of both these heating elements.

The propane gas heats quickly and hence it is considered to be more environment friendly. Moreover, when burned propane does not produce significant amount of carbon di oxide and is certified as a clean gas. On the other hand, oil burns hotter than propane and so heats up faster and is used more slowly than propane. At the same time, oil is also considered safe as it is not combustible in the air and does not create carbon mono oxide fumes.

As far as fuel efficiency is considered when the two systems are compared it is seen that propane furnaces are more efficient than oil furnaces. This stands true even in case of brand new furnaces. When it comes to price it is seen that propane is cheaper than oil per BTU. However, a lot of factors like localisation and seasonal factors play an important role in determining the price of both these agents.

When you are deciding between the two it is necessary that you take into account the maintenance of each of these. For example, oil furnaces are easily serviced by the delivery company but the maintenance can be quite a herculean task due to dirt and soot accumulation. On the other hand, propane furnaces require very less maintenance.

Last but not the least, carefully understand the features of both these before you arrive at a decision.
